Skills

Education combines practical and fundamental journalism teaching (approx. 2/3 of Education), with general teaching (1/3) aimed at developing analytical methods, a solid general culture and critical thinking skills. The aim is to prepare students for their profession and its social responsibilities. In addition to the three specializations developed (radio, TV, print media), Education focuses on the new challenges of digital and web journalism. The Journalism course is designed to enable students to develop key professional activities over the course of their Education . A set of skills is associated with each activity. ● Respect the principles of ethics, deontology and environmental responsibility;
● Include their practice in the fight against discrimination, sexist and sexual violence (SGBV) and for gender equality;
● Define, characterize an editorial line (group);
● Write a description (bear, who we are, editorial ....);
● Design a visual identity/graphic charter;
● Research, propose subject ideas to sponsor, peers and department head;
● Define and delimit suitable angles (group);
● Define and select journalistic formats and genres (group);
● Write a railroad or conductor (group).

● Inscribe their practice in the fight against discrimination, sexist and sexual violence (SGBV) and for gender equality;
● Document themselves on the subject at hand using French and English-speaking resources;
● Identify sources (individuals - experts - witnesses);
● Evaluate the quality and reliability of sources;
● Gather information from French- or English-speaking sources;
● Analyze, cross-check and prioritize the information gathered;
● Produce a layout adapted to the media's editorial line, media (print press, radio, ..), dedicated formats (interview, report, etc.) and target audiences.

● Inscribe its practice in the fight against discrimination, sexist and sexual violence (SGBV) and for gender equality;
● Identify and assign roles and responsibilities (collective-group);
● Identify material and logistical needs;
● Plan milestones and deadlines;
● Monitor and lead the team;
● Ensure compliance with deadlines and ethical principles;
● Ensure compliance with the legal framework and look after the well-being of collaborators in the professional environment.

● Create different reading levels and write titles, intertitles, caps and captions;
● Edit audio, video or multimedia reports;
● Rewrite, rework content and editorial elements to adapt them to media and audiences;
● Combine, prioritize and enrich texts, images and sounds;
● Index content;
● Distribute content, ensure its visibility, monitor and analyze the audience;
● Interact with audiences and participate in reflection on the various contents and their enhancement.

 

● Identify digital uses and the impact of their evolution on the field(s) concerned by the journalism major;
● Maintain an active watch on digital tools (software and applications);
● Identify the digital tools and resources needed to design and carry out a journalistic project;
● Independently use advanced digital tools for one or more journalistic professions or sectors;
● Research, analyze and format data for data journalism;
● Spot misinformation phenomena and publish corrective content;
● Keep an active watch on usage codes, logics and operating modes of web platforms and players;
● Design and adapt content for different screens (and mobiles, including vertical scrolling).

● Research and mobilize scientific knowledge applied to journalism and the media;
● Conduct a reflexive and distanced analysis taking into account the issues (local, national and international), problems and complexity ;
● Mobilize a research method adapted to the problem and gather the results;
● Analyze and interpret the results;
● Restate the results of research and adapt the formats to the issues, audiences;
● Develop a critical awareness of knowledge in a field and/or at the interface of several fields.
