At a time when the level of scientific certainty about the brutal and lasting degradation of living conditions on earth has never been higher, the digital transition and artificial intelligence are often presented as solutions to curb the ecological crisis. Promoters of digital innovations promise to optimize resources, reduce carbon emissions and create more sustainable models. But transitions to the all-digital world are also leading to increased energy consumption and electronic waste. More generally, the development of digital technology, screens and artificial intelligence is increasing human dependence on technologies that are increasingly autonomous from conventional forms of socio-political regulation.

Sciences Po Grenoble-UGA has invested in these issues by giving ecological and digital transitions an important place in its curriculum, right from the undergraduate level. The school is taking this opportunity to give the floor to a leading scientist and political player, who has devoted a significant part of his work to these issues.

Cédric Villani is a French mathematician, University Professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and former Director of the Institut Henri Poincaré. His work on kinetic theory and optimal transport has been rewarded with numerous distinctions, including the prestigious Fields Medal. In 2017, he was elected Member of Parliament for Essonne, writing landmark reports on artificial intelligence and mathematics education. Committed to disseminating scientific knowledge to the general public, Cédric Villani has been Chairman of the Fondation de l'écologie politique since March 2024.
