In the aftermath of an election decisive for the future of the United States

Andrew L. Yarrow will analyze and discuss the early results of the November 5 U.S. election, what it may mean for the U.S. and the world, and how it fits into the broader, longer context of U.S. political history and contemporary American society. In some ways, the American election is the culmination of a year of important elections in the European Union, Britain, India, France and elsewhere. Described as the closest American election of the century, the presidential candidates and the two main parties presented radically different visions of America and its future. The campaign, long, dramatic and bitter, was not only or mainly about political differences, but at least as much about deep cultural cleavages in the country. In addition to the presidency, the election will determine which party controls the sharply divided Senate and House of Representatives. Although the final results may not be known, whoever wins, the United States will remain a polarized nation.

The US Election: What We Know and What it May Mean

Andrew L. Yarrow will discuss what happened in the US election on November 5, what it may mean for the United States and the world, and how it fits into the longer and larger contexts of US political history and contemporary American society. In some ways, the US election is the culmination of a year of consequential elections in the European Union, Britain, India, France, and elsewhere. Described as the closest US election of the century, the presidential candidates and the two major parties presented starkly different visions of America and its future. The long, dramatic, and bitter campaign was not only or primarily about policy differences but at least as much about profound cultural divides in the country. In addition to the Presidency, the election will have decided which party controls the closely divided Senate and House of Representatives. Although definitive results may not yet be known, whoever triumphs, the United States will remain a polarized nation.
