Law Night in Lyon: The Master's in Territorial Governance Takes First Place

During “Law Night,” held in Lyon, students in the Master’s program in Territorial Governance—a joint program offered by the UGA School of Law and Sciences Po Grenoble—took on the challenge of the escape game “In Search of the Rule of Law,” organized by the Lyon Administrative Court.

Among the 15 teams that competed, one of the two teams representing the Master’s program took first place, finishing ahead of ten teams from Lyon, among others! This impressive performance demonstrates their ability to apply their knowledge, analytical skills, and teamwork in a particularly immersive setting.

Congratulations to Lilouane Etre Colard, Anaïs Vanoorenberghe, Léo Chartoire, Damien Fernandes, and Matthieu Guenot on this great victory!

Congratulations also to the second Master's team—composed of Maxime Rescan, Clara Gallo, Mariem Haimer, Louise Fagot, and Lou Iohner—for their participation and dedication.

The challenges, all related to administrative law, were designed by judges. Sixteen teams participated. Each team was named after a landmark administrative law decision.

The escape game consisted of two phases:

  • Phase 1: Four rooms, four envelopes to retrieve as quickly as possible.
Each room featured a different atmosphere and puzzle: piecing together a sentence to find the right code, identifying the authors of famous quotes, or spotting the only legal decree in a fictional constitution.
  • Phase 2: Complete a speech on the rule of law.
The teams had to reconstruct a famous speech by Jean-Marc Sauvé. After five minutes of reading, they had three minutes to fill in the 15 blanks using the clues gathered during the first phase. Each missing or incorrect answer resulted in a 15-second penalty on their total time.

At the end of the first two phases, the four teams with the fastest times qualified for the final. Among them was one of the two teams representing the Master’s in Territorial Governance, which had posted the fastest time among the 16 other teams.

On the agenda for this final round: a quiz consisting of about fifteen questions on legal knowledge in public law. The team from Grenoble quickly took the lead and widened the gap with its competitors, ultimately securing the victory. Congratulations to them!

I think what made the difference was that we were underdogs: no one but us thought a team from Grenoble could win against the many teams from Lyon 3, in particular. That motivated us. Our strength was our multidisciplinary approach, which allowed us to think about things in a more holistic and cross-disciplinary way. We were also confident during the challenges, and the team worked very well together. By winning this escape game, we not only earned internships at the Lyon Tax Administration, but more importantly, we demonstrated that Sciences Po and the Grenoble School of Law also produce excellent legal professionals.
