Robert IVERMEE, Senior Lecturer in Modern History

Specialist in British and French colonialism in South Asia. Member of the Pacte laboratory and the
"Environnements" team.

Robert Ivermee has been Senior Lecturer in Modern History at Sciences Po Grenoble - UGA since September 1, 2025.

A specialist in British and French colonialism in South Asia, his research explores the ideologies and practices of colonialism, as well as their environmental impacts. He is the author of three monographs, including Hooghly: The Global History of a River (2020) and Glorious Failure: The Forgotten History of French Imperialism in India (2025), as well as numerous other publications.

Before joining Sciences Po Grenoble - UGA, he was a lecturer for four years at the Institut Catholique de Paris, where he directed the Master in English Studies.

A graduate of Oxford University, SOAS University of London and the University of Kent, where he defended his doctoral thesis in 2013, he has over fifteen years' experience in higher education in the UK, France and India. His teaching focuses on the history of colonialism and the postcolonial English-speaking world.

His current research project examines British attempts to colonize and transform the Sundarbans region of the Ganges delta in the 19th century. He is a member of the Pacte laboratory's "Environments" team.
