Biography
Daniel Meier is a Junior Professor (CPJ) and holds the Chair in the Geopolitics of Borders in the Middle East at Sciences Po Grenoble. He holds a Ph.D. in political sociology from the Graduate Institute (IHEID) in Geneva and has received several fellowships (AUF, FNS, CLS, Heinrich Böll) during his postdoctoral studies (Saint Joseph University—Beirut, St. Antony’s College—University of Oxford; International Center for Border Studies at Queen’s University—Belfast). In 2014, he joined the European EUborderscapes program at the University of Grenoble-Alpes (UGA) and began a collaboration with Sciences Po Grenoble. He has conducted several field studies in the Middle East since 2001 and has published extensively on the topics of refugees, borders, and conflicts. He is the author of *Shaping Lebanon’s Borderlands: Armed Resistance and International Intervention in South Lebanon * (IB Tauris, 2016) and* : Lebanon, from the Phoenician Myth to Contemporary Perils* (Le Cavalier Bleu, 2025).

Current Projects
Geopolitics of Borders in the Middle East (GMO Borders)
Research on borders (border studies) in all their complexity—including, among other things, border control and border control instruments (such as artificial intelligence tools)—aims to make research on the Middle East at Sciences Po Grenoble-UGA even more dynamic. At CERDAP², this theme aligns perfectly with the laboratory’s Research Area 2 strategy—particularly regarding the current challenges inherent in conflicts and migration—in addition to the laboratory’s recognized expertise on the Mediterranean-Middle East region.
